Given the current housing market in Havasu, Partnership for Economic Development CEO James Gray said a workforce housing development has to be creative in finding ways to keep down the cost.

“We are at a time where, to lower the cost of living we have to do things differently,” Gray said. “The hope to bring a median price from $420,000 to $405,000 doesn’t really help people. So we have to create different alternatives for people.”

He said some affordable housing developments sell the structure, but lease the land that it sits on. Gray said such developments can include lots of amenities like security, gyms, pools and more, while still remaining affordable for workers in the community.

I did not enjoy any of these aminities until I could afford them. What the Hell!

If you build it, will they come?

The former Mayor mentioned it more than once. The LHC demographics do not support a larger sized company that pays a living wage to move here and invest. The workforce is too aging / aged.

Come to think of it there is an easy way to solve this problem. The solution - pay the people a living wage. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics our workforce is paid about 23% below the national average. So the easy fix it open your wallet and pay people what they deserve.

Everyone wins, they become full time residents dedicated to our community, They become investors in the businesses we start, they buy new cars, new homes and what do you know, the lack of workforce housing disappears.

Really, the building looks like “the projects “

I had the same impression and we have all seen what happens in "the projects" they become slums.

I have been talking about that for years!! There is a lot of land down off the highway across from Lowes. Turn that into apartment complexes, duplexes and townhomes if needed. That would help out the workforce housing and bring more people to the Northside to help development at and around the mall for commercial and industrial use. We also need to stop the damn storage right on the highway or in the prime locations. That is another idea for multilevet. Put one of those large storage buildings off of London bridge road or out of the way. Well hopefully all of this will become a reality sooner than later. From what I'm hearing there is a lot going on at the mall with medical, now we just need to get more commercial.

I wouldn't like to see more multi=level structures in the city, blocking the view-shed. Also, trailer parks? Really? Sounds Beautiful... It seems to me that regardless of what you build, Californians will still want to buy them as well as snowbirds. How does just building 'more' solve the issue of Havasu as a popular place for vacation home purchases? I don't know enough about it other than it is complicated.

Stop the rhetoric and start converting that "dead mall" into something useful, with ample parking and within walking distance to big box stores and banking.

Now that is an idea that just might work. Will it be done - well it is certainly worth investigating the idea? And the city has it within its power to make it happen. There are whole sections of the Mall which could be easily converted into residential units. You could lease them or sell them. And if I remember correctly one whole section or strip of the Mall is now controlled or owned by a single company. Why wait for that magical tennant to show up when with a little work the vacant units could be turned into a monthly cash flow.

Wouldn't take a whole lot of money to convert a storefront into a one two or three bedroom residential unit. Why build a multistory complex when a single story complex is already almost completed?

DIFFERENT TOPIC Has anyone noticed how dark the parking lot is at the Mall after sundown? I think someone has turned off 1/2 of the parking lot lighting to save money which to me increases the danger to everyone. There are some spots now so dark you can't even see where you parked your vehicle.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN BE CAREFUL after dark at the Mall. What most likely should have been done is to have selectively reducing the light intensity at certain locations where the storefronts are vacant.

Middle of The Road

They need to shutter the mall. They built it when strip malls were on the decline and never did the homework, finding out the criteria for franchises to come here. It is forever dead. Best thing they could do is turn the unused storefronts in to condominiums or storage!!
