As of January 2024, Gary Knight will have met his term limit of six years on the Arizona State Transportation Board. Currently chairman of the board, Knight represents District 6, which includes Yavapai, Yuma, Mohave and La Paz counties. That means a new representative from these counties will be sought to replace him. I had a great conversation with Mr. Knight, and found out that at times like these, board members at the ends of their terms can either resign from the board outright, or can stay on until a replacement has been approved by the governor and the Senate.
As administrative changes have caused delays in the process to replace Mr. Knight’s seat, ADOT has asked him to stay on until his replacement has been approved to ensure transportation business continues across Arizona. He has agreed to do so.
For those who don’t know about the importance of this board, it is granted powers by the governor and serves in an advisory capacity to the director of the Arizona Department of Transportation. The Arizona State Transportation Board awards construction contracts, monitors the status of construction projects and has the exclusive authority to issue revenue bonds for transportation financing. You can find more on this at aztransportationboard.gov/home.
This is a great opportunity for someone from Lake Havasu City to attain this position and represent all of District 6 for the next six years.
The board needs someone with understanding of transportation, knowledge about economic growth and what it takes to keep transportation running fluidly across all of Arizona.
The process is a bit grueling, but for the right person, should be a breeze. First, an application needs to be submitted to the governor for review. With that application should be a series of “letters of recommendations” from our mayor and City Council, Chamber of Commerce and politically influential legislators.
Each recommendation should disclose background qualifications that are related to the board’s importance. Qualifications can included experience in transportation, economic growth, and how that experience impacted the county and state.
We do have someone in Lake Havasu City that meets the standards of what is needed to replace Gary Knight as District 6 representative. Her name is Nancy Campbell.
When talking to Gary Knight, I asked him about the two people across Mohave County that have interest in replacing his position. One is the former mayor of Bullhead City, Tom Brady, and the other is Lake Havasu City Councilwoman Nancy Campbell. He felt they would both do very well in the position.
